Well, even an old dog can learn it seems. For years, during full scenarios where a vast range of training devices (including NLTA) are employed, I have been a big advocate of walking through what happened in a scenario during a debrief. The training value that occurs from actually walking through what happened during the training scenario (as opposed to simply talking about it) is immense. The way I had always done it in the past is with protective masks off, using "finger guns ONLY" in the event there had been a shooting situation.
During my instructors schools I had always cautioned my students to make sure that they were right beside the training participant to stop them if they actually tried to draw their converted pistol during the debrief, since the role player would not be wearing the necessary protective gear - masks off, finger guns only ... remember? Well, fpr years this had been sufficient to ensure no guns came out of holsters ... until that fateful day last month, when during a walk-through, the keyed up student managed to draw and fire before the instructor (or me) had a chance to stop them. Fortunately, only one shot was fired and it was a wild shot. This is exactly the way training safety protocols evolve.
My new protocol prior to beginning the debrief is, "Guns grounded, masks off, finger guns only.
We live, we learn.
Stay safe
