In this forum, we look for news stories and the associated commentary that inevitably follows. In this forum, we will reprint the story, and then following the story, we will reproduce some of the commentary that the story generated by those who read the story. Our discussion of those commentaries will follow in a separate response.
It is the purpose of this forum to dispel many of the myths associated with much of that commentary. Misinformed people, those ignorant of the facts and realities of officer actions, often respond to stories about critical incidents based on either an emotional response or an uninformed bias. By addressing the facts and busting the myths, hopefully those who choose to read this forum will be better educated as to the realities of the dangers faced by many officers.
Too often, officer actions themselves are based on flawed training or born of faulty beliefs based on mythology. The sooner such flawed thinking is addressed and fixed, the safer it is for officers in the street and, ultimately, society at large.
