As you probally know on Sunday Nov 29th, 2009 a suspect, who shall remain nameless, entered a coffee shop and killed four officers, who shall NOT remain nameless, Lakewood Police officers Greg Richards, Mark Renninger, Tina Griswold and Ronald Owens. After this incident a local rangemaster sent an email to his guys. I have been told it was okay to foward this on.

My friends, in light of the most recent tragedy in Pierce County, I feel as a Range Master the urge to say a few things. I am reminded by all of this of the reality that there are evil people out there who target law enforcement as the enemy and will do anything they can to destroy us. Not knowing the tactics of these officers and how or where they were seated in the coffee shop, I will not make any judgments as to what happened. But let me remind you of this … as with Jimmy McGrane and others who have gone before us, sometimes you can do everything right and be wearing all of the body armor correctly but if somebody wants to kill you, they have a pretty good chance at succeeding ... this is the nature of the job!!

It is our individual duty to minimize that chance by doing several things:

Training (Yes, on your own at times when the Dept. won’t send you or provide bullets)
Carrying your Gun (Yes, all the time)
Refreshing Defensive Tactics (Might involve some pain)
Staying in good physical health (Join a gym or come to the Main for free for Pete’s sake!!!)

And the best one …. Keeping a Tactical mindset that stays sharp and ready and makes plans to win the fight!!

Friends it worries me to hear troops come through the Range talking about how much they hate this job and are counting the days to retire, bla, bla, bla. Do yourself and your family and the rest of us a favor and leave now because you’re a hazard and you’re certainly not wearing the badge for the right reason.

The guy out there with the gun doesn’t care about how you feel about your job. They don’t care about how you feel about your Sgt. or Lt. or anyone else up the chain. They don’t care that you are just “doing your time” or just running to the corner store, or just out for dinner with your family!! They don’t care that you didn’t have time to practice shooting or that you only want to do the bare minimum to get by. You are wearing a badge and are driving a police car and therefore you are the enemy plain and simple!!

Please take your job serious. Please remember that you swore an oath before God, a Judge, and your friends and family to serve and protect the citizens of this county. And implied in that is your willingness to maintain yourself to a standard that is a little higher then the rest of the citizens and certainly higher then the bad guys. If for some reason you don’t feel that you can do this anymore then be responsible enough to surrender your badge and gun and do something else. The good guys are depending on you to be there and to be ready.

Remember … “Willingness is a state of mind … Readiness is a statement of fact” Are you ready??

That is all - The Range Master
