Winning dangerous encounters isn't simply about winning the initial battle, although without that victory the other battles are moot. Much of the training that exists, and toward which the majority of the training resources are directed, focus on physical survival. There are, however, six other equally vital battles that must be won. In the 1940's Abraham Maslow, one of the founders of humanistic psychology, posited that human beings employ a hierarchy when it comes to fulfilling their needs. The precondition for fulfilling higher-order needs is that lower-order, more basic needs must be met first. The Seven Survivals parallels Maslow's Heirarchy in content, but when it comes to recovering from the effects of use of force encounters, many of these other battles need to be won before any physical battle. Some must be won following the physical encounter. In that regard, the Seven Survivals are more like a continuum than a heirarchy. To ignore these needs is akin to creating what Lt. Col. Dave Grossman calls "one shot disposable cops" in his book On Combat. This forum discusses those other Survivals and provides insight and discussion on how to ensure total victory. It also details various case studies where the other survivals had not been considered or were not won, and the catastrophic consequences that resulted. The Seven Survivals are Physical, Psychological/Emotional, Legal, Financial, Professional, Social and Spiritual. Since each of the Seven Survivals has its own forum, the general forum is closed to posts. Please use the subforums under this heading to post your discussions.

This area discusses issues related to keeping your job in the aftermath of use of force situations. Many of the so called "violations" that occur during use of force situations are not violations of law, but rather violations of internal policy. While there may be no criminal implications, many have lost their livelihood following a legally correct application of force that falls outside the policy safe zone. This forum discusses ways to help ensure harmony between policy and training, as well as how Reality Based Training can help sculpt policy that balances the needs of the community with effective training strategies
Lt. James Como from the Ocoee, FL Police Department once likened society's wish for law enforcement to be that of a Genie that could be summoned at will and then put back into the lamp when not immediately needed. There will always be friction between law enforcers and the communities they serve. This forum discusses strategies for minimizing that friction and building stronger relationships, both personally and organizationally, with the community.
One of the common elements between those who do well in the aftermath of a life threatening encounter and those who do not fare so well is the belief in some sort of higher power and higher purpose. It is not the intention of this forum to go off in the direction of religiousity, but rather to discuss the importance of faith in something bigger than you and its effects on the strengthening of inner peace and character following life changing situations
